With the melt down on twitter the rise of other social networking platforms was inevitable. Some had good ideas but badly executed, some worked as stopgaps but some worked outright.
The first one I tried was Mastodon. It was a good idea and as a former IRC user (kids ask your parents...) I kinda like the decentralisation of it all. And as a web developer myself (I actually built this platform you're using now...) I appreciate the intricacies and nuance's of sites and platforms from a tech perspective. The issue with mastodon was also the decentralisation of it's platform. It formed bubbles and some people who ran the separate servers (instances) would not play well with others and issues of compatibility would arise.
I knew using this platform that it was a good start but something else needed to be used.
Then Threads hit. And boy did it ever hit hard. A refreshing change to the status quo and no decentralisation to worry about. At the time of writing this I still use it but I do find myself drifting to Bluesky (more on that in a little bit...) As a start up platform by Meta (the people behind facebook) it seemed like we were all in it together and helping start something new. It lacked some features, things like Direct messaging, trending topics, hash tags to name but a few. threads launched initially July 2023, and despite the powerhouse of Meta being behind it, some much wanted features seem to be missing still. In my opinion some of the features are a necessary evil when forming a service like a social network, DM's I can live without but not hard to implement, but things like a bad media player? no hashtags? - Well I say no hashtags, we have the ability to have one. Not idea and kind of counter intuitive to the idea of hashtags.
The lack of trending topics give the platform a little bit of a "life in a bubble" feel. Some of the users and with Bluesky's features already present it's making threads seem s little lacking (almost thread bare.... #dadjoke)
Now it seems a sudden rise of blue sky seems to rattle Mark Zuckerberg and it matter to the point that they’re actually adding new features into threads that are already present on blue sky almost like they’re suddenly realising they’re fighting and losing battle.
I do have a Twitter account and it’s still active mainly because as a developer I used their services but since Elon Musk over the API has completely inly fell apart and I refuse to pay for it. I’m not gonna take my account off-line because quite frankly I like the username I’ve got and I don’t wanna give it away but I have no intentions of using it.
Yes, I have a Threads account and yes, I have a blue skies account for the moment. I’m quite happy to have both. They both seem to operate and try different types of audiences and I don’t really understand this totalitarian idea of One or the other I like both so I’m gonna use both and I don’t really like that sort of people that force you into this one or the other mentality it’s unhealthy and quite friendly competition really does bring out the best.
